The sun may be on its way down after the solstice, but things are heating up at Wapping with pre-season just around the corner! Read on for all the juicy deets and get ready to shake off the summer snooze and dive back into hockey mode.

🥳🏑Club Day 🏑🥳

This year, Club Day is coming at you a little earlier, and we’ve packed in loads of pre-season hockey to get everyone buzzing. We’re keeping things simple but fun with a streamlined Club Day, spotlighting a mega junior session followed by a mixed tournament for new joiners, current members, and alumni alike – perfect for showing off your skills and meeting the Wapping fam.

After that? We hit the town for a proper social send-off. 🍻

  • Saturday 9th August @ Lee Valley

  • 10:00-11:30 - Kidds session

    • U10-U18 - members and newbies all welcome!

  • 12:00-16:00 - Fun, friendly mixed 6-a-side tournament

    • Members, newbies, alumni and juniors who play senior league all welcome!

    • Please complete this form by 2nd August if keen to play/umpire

  • 16:30- late - Social @ Hackney Bridge 🍻

Our shiny new kit collab with Grays is in full swing, and we’re bringing the goods to Club Day! Swing by the stall (open from 10am–2pm) to try stuff on, try equipment out, and flex in the latest gear.

NB. For those new to the club, Wapping provides team home and away shirts – so no shirt purchases are necessary to join or play ☺️

Pre-season

Pre-season isn’t just for dusting off cobwebs and catching up—it’s also when initial selection happens. With the season kicking off on 20th Sept (13th for W8/9), we need to lock teams in before league play begins.

No formal “trials”- think summer tour meets talent show. Selection happens at training and inter-club games (last year’s teams vs the one above/below, with new joiners mixed in). More hockey, more fun, more chances to shine!

Your lovely club captains Issy, Anna, Chris and Aaron, and VCP, Warren, are working with coaches to keep things smooth - but they need you to show up and give it some welly! We know August = holidays, hangovers, and dodgy tan lines, but if you’re around, get stuck in.

Inter-club games

Below is the list of inter-club games – pop them in your diary! If you can’t make any, let your captain or club captain know. We’ll be keeping it social with drinks after the games so prepare yourself for sideline vibes and a post match pub trip 🍻

Training

Training kicks off the week of 4th August for 1s & 2s, and w/c 11th August for everyone else—a bit earlier than last year, thanks to your feedback to help teams settle before the season starts.

Behind the scenes, sorting pitch slots is a logistical jigsaw puzzle (think Tetris but with coaches and pitch slots), but hang tight—we’ll have session times confirmed very soon!

Wapping HC Exec 

  • Vice-Chair (Community) 

    • Supports the Chair and leads community efforts, helping run the club smoothly and stepping in when needed to foster a strong, engaged club environment.

Wapping HC Committee 

  • Newsletter and Website Secretary

    • Writes the weekly Back Post newsletter and keeps the website updated with key info for members and newcomers.

  • Sponsorship Secretary

    • responsible for securing and managing sponsorships to financially support the club

  • Umpire Liaison Officer

    • Great for someone organised and admin-savvy—no umpiring needed thanks to our four brilliant Umpire Development Officers.

  • Coaching Development Officer 

    • a relatively new role created to support and develop coaching at Wapping

  • Social Secretary

    • suitable for someone passionate about improving Wapping’s social life 

  • Welfare Officer (Men’s)

    • Half of a dynamic duo driving senior club welfare, championing wellbeing, and ensuring seamless communication inside and out.

  • Kit Secretary

    • Handles equipment orders for training and games, and ensures teams can get their Wapping merch.

  • Chair of City & Wharf Summer League

    • Leads the planning and delivery of CAWHL, overseeing logistics, teams, and finances to support fun, inclusive hockey.

  • Captains:

    • Men's 1s, 5s and Dockers

    • Women's 6s

    • Pirates

If you have questions about any of the roles, please get in touch with a member of the Exec or Committee. 

Nominations must be seconded by one other WHC member. To put yourself forward for a role, please email wappingelections@gmail.com confirming your interest and copy in the member seconding you. Positions can be shared by two members, even if that's not specifically highlighted below, but following AGM Committee roles that are split will also share the concession rate discount - you will not both get the full concession rate.
