Beginner and Development PLAYER Pathway
Wapping Hockey Club is committed to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for players who are new to or unfamiliar with hockey. We aim to provide a clear and supportive pathway for beginner and development players to join our entry-level competitive teams, the W8s and M8s.
What is the pathway?
It provides new players with support to develop the skills and confidence to participate safely and enjoyably in training and matches. The pathway works alongside B2H. While B2H is recommended for complete beginners, attending B2H is not a prerequisite for joining the pathway.
Who does this impact?
This pathway applies to new joiners who are beginner or development players who would benefit from further support in their development. The aim is to support their progression towards W8s or M8s.
A beginner or development player is typically identified as someone who possesses no prior experience in the sport, has extremely limited history with the game, or has played previously but never within a formal league structure.
How does it work?
When a player expresses a desire to play league hockey, the player can attend W8/M8 training, alongside B2H if they wish. The player will enter the pathway and purchase a Development Membership.
As a guidance, players should commit to attending around four W8 or M8 training sessions before being considered for matchday selection.
The Development Membership fee is:
£30 for players joining prior to the first league fixtures of the season; and
£40 for players joining following the commencement of league fixtures.
Where a player becomes a full playing member of the Club, the value of the Development Membership will be deducted from their annual membership fee.
Where can I get more infomation?
Please email our Club Captains at wappingmcc@gmail.com or wappinglcc@gmail.com for questions, to get involved with the pathway, or for any help.
TRY HOCKEY FOR FREE AT OUR Back 2 Hockey SESSIONS
What is Back 2 Hockey (B2H)?
‘Back 2 Hockey’ are FREE adult hockey training sessions, games and socials specifically aimed at people who have never played before (hockey beginners) or haven’t for a while.
The East London based Back 2 Hockey sessions are fun, social, informal, and a great way to get fitter and meet new people. If you are a little apprehensive, unsure of the rules, or worried that you won’t know anyone, don’t worry! The session is taken by a qualified coach to guide the group through a series of fun and interactive sessions in a friendly and relaxed environment.
Each Back 2 Hockey session helps players develop their individual skills and take part in small-sided friendly games. As well as igniting a love for the sport, Wapping also organises socials to help make friends along the way.
When is Back 2 Hockey?
During the season Back 2 Hockey sessions run every other Monday (19:00-20:30) at John Orwell Sports Centre, (Wapping, Tower Hamlets, East London). The dates for the first half of the season are:
14th Sep, 28th Sep, 12th Oct, 26th Oct, 9th Nov, 23rd Nov, 30th Nov.
How much is it?
All B2H sessions are totally FREE!
What kit do I need?
No equipment is necessary (just wear comfy clothes, trainers and bring a bottle of water) however we would recommend those who wish to play regularly invest in shin pads and gum-shields for protection. We have sticks you can borrow.
How do I get involved?
To get involved just pop along to a session soon! (Please arrive around 10 mins ahead of time so we can make the most of the pitch and organise any kit)
We love to know how everyone’s getting on so feel free to share your stories, photos and videos with us. You can tag us on Instagram and Facebook.
